On November 15, 1989 a young man took his guard at the
National Stadium at Karachi in what is the toughest initiation for a
young Indian cricketer - India playing Pakistan in Pakistan. All of
16 years old, Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar was on that fateful day
thrust into the international spotlight. He was looked at as the
World's most promising young cricketer and Indian cricket's rising
star. Now, a little over a decade later all the promises have been
fulfilled and many records have been shattered by this Master
Blaster. On his 27th birthday we salute the tall man of Indian
cricket - the incomparable, the inimitable, the inspiring Sachin
Tendulkar. Sachin's debut The youngest player to wear a test cap for his country - Sachin Tendulkar was all of 16 years old when he took on the mighty Pakistanis in Pakistan and played alongside some of his childhood heroes on debut. He was able to score only 15 runs in his first innings before he was bowled out by fellow debutant Waqar Younis. He followed up his first stint on the crease with a masterful 59 runs in the first innings of the second test. What impressed the members of the cricketing fraternity and the fans alike was the determination with which this young man faced a tough opposition. The signs were all there - Sachin Tendulkar was not a flash in the pan, he had arrived and he was here to stay. Sachin in Yorkshire Recognised as an exceptional cricketer not just in India, but the world over Sachin had a unique honour bestowed upon him when he was invited as the first overseas player in 130 years by the Yorkshire county in England. He was all of nineteen years old and had the added burden of being the first "coloured" player for the county. Undeterred, Sachin impressed all not only by his immense talent with the bat, but by his humility. Prompting Ex-Yorkshire player, and self confessed Sachin fan Geoffrey Boycott to remark, "We'd have him back tomorrow if we could!" |
